Phyllis Piano, senior counselor at APCO, has more than 30 years of experience in corporate communication and reputation management, having served as chief communication officer for several industry-leading companies in the high-technology medical equipment, biotechnology, defense and electronics industries. Ms. Piano brings global executive-level expertise in public relations, public affairs, brand management, marketing, corporate responsibility, internal communication and change management.

Most recently, Ms. Piano was vice president of corporate communications and philanthropy at Amgen, the world’s largest biotechnology company. She also served as a member of the Amgen Foundation board of directors.

Prior to joining Amgen, Ms. Piano was vice president of public affairs at Cooper Industries, Inc., a worldwide manufacturer of electrical products, tools and hardware; she was also president of the company’s foundation. She later became vice president of corporate affairs and communications for Raytheon Company, a major American defense contractor and industrial corporation with core manufacturing concentrations in weapons and military and commercial electronics.

Ms. Piano began her career in the medical-systems business of General Electric. Throughout her 17-year tenure with the company, she held multiple leadership roles in communication, public relations and philanthropy. She developed many groundbreaking communication and reputation management programs as the company expanded its health-care business across the globe.

Ms. Piano has served as chair of The Seminar, the world’s leading organization for chief communication officers, where she was also chair of the governance committee and a member of the leadership committee. She has lectured at leading universities and has received several awards for her communication and philanthropic work.
