
Joe Rankin is a senior strategic communications and external affairs professional. He is known for tackling complex reputational challenges with robust strategies and bold solutions and advising leaders in moments of opportunity and risk. Based in London, Joe is a senior director in APCO’s Global Solutions practice, leading demanding projects and campaigns around the world that often address important, complex and contentious issues. Over the course of 18 years in consultancy and in-house roles, Joe has gained multidisciplinary experience across communications, public affairs, crisis and issues management.

Joe works with high-profile individuals, organisations and governments to protect and build their reputation. Much of this work has international remits, and Joe has worked in a number of challenging and fascinating locations, including in West Africa, on Rio Tinto’s Simandou mining project in Guinea and in the Middle East on secondment with Saudi Aramco. He has particular experience and expertise in energy and resources, transport and aviation, consumer goods, fintech and financial services.
Prior to joining APCO, Joe was a senior director in the International Campaigns and Issues Management practice of a large global consulting business. His in-house experience encompasses senior communications roles at Klarna and London City Airport, where he served as Head of Communications during the pandemic.
Joe holds a degree in Politics from the University of York and, in addition to academic study, has, in the past, been actively involved in politics, including election campaigns.
