It is with great sadness that I share with you the news that Stewart Gamage, APCO’s first chief operating officer, has passed away.
Stewart was a great contributor to shaping APCO’s early days. She came to APCO after working as policy director in the office of House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt and the director of the Virginia Liaison Office and senior assistant to Governors Charles Robb and Gerald Baliles as well as associate deputy of intergovernmental affairs at the White House and various other policy positions. Stewart later became a client in her work at the University of Virginia as Program Director for Morven and the formation of the Presidential Precinct as well as her work with William and Mary, her alma mater.
Stewart’s life was dedicated to public service and advancing women. She raised two wonderful children, Graves and Forbes Tompkins. She was a great personal friend and an incredible advocate for APCO for her entire career.
The memorial service for Stewart will be held at Christ Church in Alexandria, VA. The service will be held next Friday, April 5, at 11am. For anyone who would like to participate virtually, the service can be accessed at https://ccalex.online.church (the link will go live when the service starts at 11am).
Her family is creating two fellowships through William & Mary—one focused on advancing global diplomacy and the other focused on serving Virginia—two causes she cared deeply about. There will be more information in the coming weeks and months but, for now, anyone who would like to contribute can make a donation here: Impact.wm.edu/Gamage
