Saga McFarland is an associate director at APCO and is based in New York. She is an experienced strategist with a background in China policy, public affairs and government relations. She has extensive experience strategically analyzing regulatory and political developments with an eye for identifying opportunities for leverage and action.
Ms. McFarland began her career at APCO’s Beijing office where she helped clients proactively anticipate and respond to political and regulatory hurdles in the Chinese market. Prior to rejoining APCO in New York, Ms. McFarland worked in the press office of the U.S. embassy in Beijing and as a journalist for CNN and one of China’s few independent news outlets, the Beijing-based Caixin Global. She also served as a researcher and strategist for U.S.-based Chinese labor groups, where she oversaw investigations into forced labor conditions on Chinese-invested projects.
Ms. McFarland holds a master’s degree in human rights studies from Columbia University and is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies Center in Nanjing, China. She received her Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Hong Kong. Ms. McFarland grew up in New York City. She is a native speaker of English and Swedish and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
