Dan Smith is a strategic communicator, trusted advisor, natural team leader and proven market driver. He has over a decade of professional experience advising diverse clientele, including Fortune 500 companies, utilities, trade associations, advocacy organizations and political candidates. As a Director in APCO’s Raleigh office, Dan has extensive client experience in energy, frontier technology, global consumer packaged goods, telecommunications, corporate social responsibility, health and financial services. He offers a wealth of expertise in public affairs, public relations, digital and paid media, corporate communications, media relations and creative storytelling.
Prior to joining APCO, Dan served as a managing associate at CLS Strategies, a boutique consulting firm in Washington, D.C., where he specialized in paid media, integrated public affairs campaigns, reputation and advisory. He previously served as manager of Digital Media & Communications at the Institute for Energy Research, a non-profit organization that conducts research and analysis on global energy markets.
Dan received PR News’ “Rising Stars 30 & Under Award” in 2017 in recognition of his consistent ability to deliver for his clients. He earned his Bachelor of Arts with honors in English from Furman University and his Master of Arts in Mass Communications from the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications in 2022.
