A qualified corporate lawyer, Alyn Smith, was elected to the European Parliament in 2004 to represent Scotland. He won re-election three times, serving 16 years in Brussels and Strasbourg. He worked on various committees, developing a deep familiarity with Industry Research and Energy, Regional Development, Agriculture and Foreign Affairs. He served on the Parliament’s Middle East Working Group, the Arabian Peninsula and Iraq Delegations and the Switzerland, Iceland and Norway Delegations. He was a lead campaigner in Scotland in the 2016 EU Referendum and has wide-ranging expertise on Third Country-EU relations, EU Accession, Energy, Research, Trade, Cultural Policy and Agriculture.
He left Brussels when he was elected to the UK House of Commons in the December 2019 election. He served as Foreign Affairs frontbencher, then Europe and EU Accession frontbencher for his Group, as well as on the UK-EU Parliamentary Partnership Assembly and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly.
Alyn is vice president of the European Movement in Scotland, the leading bipartisan pro-EU civil society group. He is an experienced non-profit board member having served on the boards of two nationwide charities, is presently chair of the board of directors of Creative Stirling, a successful creative enterprise helping over 200 artists market and sell their creations, and a director of Radical Weavers, a non-profit using traditional Scottish weaving skills to help young adults from disadvantaged groups overcome social isolation and mental health issues.
