Capitol Hill Veteran Adds to APCO’s Government Relations, Financial Services Expertise

Washington, D.C. (September 28, 2011) – Christopher McCannell, former chief of staff to Rep. Michael E. McMahon (D-N.Y.), joins APCO Worldwide as a vice president in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office, Robert Schooling, D.C. managing director, announced today.

“Chris brings in-depth experience in formulating influential government affairs strategies in both the public and private sectors,” said Schooling. “His strong understanding of today’s political and financial landscape, as well as his relationships with members of government and the media, will help us build on APCO’s strong team of former elected officials and policy experts.”

Most recently, McCannell previously served as vice president of government affairs at Ameriprise Financial, where he was responsible for maintaining legislative priorities related to the House Financial Services and Senate Banking committees. He also managed the implementation and rule-making of the Dodd-Frank regulatory reform agenda with constituent business units, company stakeholders, and key policy-makers and regulatory authorities.

Prior to joining Ameriprise Financial, McCannell was chief of staff to Rep. Michael E. McMahon (D-N.Y.). As head political, communications and legislative advisor, McCannell oversaw staff across three offices, developed legislative plans, worked on financial-services legislation and developed communication outreach strategies. He was also a director at Quinn Gillespie & Associates, a bi-partisan government relations firm in Washington, D.C., where he represented major corporations and trade associations, including Bank of America, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

“APCO has a strong public-affairs history and continues to be a trusted leader in helping clients redefine and shape the policy environment,” said McCannell. “I look forward to helping companies build mutually beneficial relationships with governments, political audiences and stakeholders.”

Earlier in his career, McCannell served as chief of staff and floor assistant to Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) and as press secretary to Rep. Steny H. Hoyer (D-M.D.) and Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski (D-P.A.). He began his career as a press assistant in the office of Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) and the office of the Democratic Policy Committee.

McCannell joins an accomplished team of government relations and financial services experts at APCO, including: David Hall, former head of group communications for HSBC in Asia; Baron Hill and Don Bonker, former members of the U.S. House of Representatives; Bill Pierce, former deputy assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS); Marc Ginsberg, former presidential adviser and former U.S. ambassador; Don Riegle, former U.S. senator; Georges Ugeux, former head of the international group of the New York Stock Exchange; and Joseph Zimmel, former managing director at Goldman Sachs.
