Former White House Health Policy Specialist Strengthens APCO’s Health Care Offering
Washington, D.C. (May 12, 2011) – Kavita Patel, a board-certified physician and a former health policy advisor to the Obama administration, joins APCO Worldwide's International Advisory Council (IAC), Founder and Chief Executive Officer Margery Kraus announced today. Dr. Patel’s expertise centers on issues including delivery system reform, access, coverage and quality.
“Kavita brings an exceptional level of health care and health policy expertise to APCO,” said Kraus.
“Kavita's comprehensive experience as both a health policy expert and health care provider makes her an invaluable resource to clients who are affected by the ongoing changes in today’s regulatory and policy environment,” said Robert Schooling, head of APCO’s global health care practice.
Dr. Patel previously served as director of policy for the White House Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs, where she applied her clinical experience to shaping U.S. health policy and provided clinical teams, medical providers and policy-makers with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively respond to the challenges of the U.S. health care system. She is currently a fellow and managing director of delivery system reform and clinical transformation at the Brooking Institution’s Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform. She is also an advisor to the Aspen Institute.
“I’m excited to become part of APCO’s distinguished team,” said Patel. “I hope my experience working with key decision-makers along the health policy spectrum will enable me to provide effective counsel to companies facing challenges in a changing health care market.”
Prior to her role with the Obama administration, Dr. Patel was deputy staff director for the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee under the leadership of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. More recently, Dr. Patel was director of the health policy program at New America Foundation, a nonprofit and nonpartisan public policy institute.
Dr. Patel received her medical training at the University of Texas Health Science Center and Oregon Health and Sciences University, where she served as a chief resident in internal medicine.
