Former Afghan Ambassador Joins APCO's Global Political Strategies Group

Firm Continues to Build Presence, Expertise in Middle East Region

Washington, D.C. (April 14, 2011) – H.E. Said T. Jawad, former ambassador of Afghanistan to the United States and chief of staff to the president of Afghanistan, joins APCO’s Global Political Strategies (GPS), APCO Founder and CEO Margery Kraus announced today.

GPS is an executive advisory service whose senior counselors provide counsel to companies and institutions at the highest levels. Ambassador Jawad brings advanced strategic insight on a range of issues affecting international and domestic companies doing business in the Middle East and Central Asia, including market entry, government relations, and trade and investment policy.

“The Middle East is becoming increasingly complicated but remains an important market filled with business potential and opportunities for growth,” said Kraus. “Ambassador Jawad’s extensive work in global business and government affairs in the region will bring unique insights and strategic counsel to clients who are seeking to do business there and will complement our existing team of experts that comprise GPS.”

While ambassador to the United States from 2003 to 2010, Ambassador Jawad also served as Afghanistan’s non-resident ambassador to Mexico, Brazil, Columbia and Argentina.

After the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Ambassador Jawad returned to Afghanistan to assist in the state-building process, where he played a versatile and crucial role as President Hamid Karzai’s press secretary, chief of staff and director of the Office of International Relations. In these positions, Ambassador Jawad formulated and managed strategies, implemented policies, assisted in the building and re-building of national institutions including the Afghan National Army and brought about major reforms in Afghanistan, notably to the Ministry of Defense.

“APCO’s commitment to excellence on both a global and local level was a natural match for me,” said Ambassador Jawad. “I look forward to integrating my business and political expertise and experience in the Gulf region and Central Asia to help companies navigate complex challenges and capitalize on new opportunities in evolving economies throughout the region while working together with other GPS members to provide operationally relevant insight into challenging markets.”

Ambassador Jawad currently serves as chairman of the Foundation for Afghanistan, a nonprofit organization that focuses on increasing human capacity and intercultural dialogue in Afghanistan, and chief executive officer of Capitalize LLC, a strategic consulting firm that specializes in investments and security in Afghanistan and the greater Gulf region. He also recently joined the Future of Diplomacy Project at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government as the inaugural Fisher Family Fellow and was named diplomat in residence at the School of Advanced International Studies at John Hopkins University.

Ambassador Jawad joins more than 40 other distinguished global business and government leaders who serve on GPS, including Marc Ginsberg, former U.S. ambassador to Morocco and an expert in Middle Eastern affairs; Lalit Mansingh, former foreign secretary of India and former Indian ambassador to the United Arab Emirates; and Devinda Subasinghe, former Sri Lankan ambassador to the United States and Mexico.
