Nelson Fernandez, executive director and managing director of APCO Worldwide's New York office, provides counsel to APCO clients on corporate communication, corporate giving, issues and crisis management, and media training. As a member of the New York office's leadership team, Mr. Fernandez is also responsible for developing new business opportunities and new products and services.
Since 2006, Mr. Fernandez has focused on developing, testing and implementing a suite of services designed to help clients anticipate emerging issues and trends to create breakthrough communication strategies and programs. Most recently, Nelson and his team co-created an event with The Atlantic magazine that convened some of the nation’s most influential thought leaders to discuss the challenges, trends and opportunities facing American businesses over the next 10 years in three critical areas: resources, workforce and innovation.
Prior to joining APCO, Mr. Fernandez worked at Burson-Marsteller for 12 years, where he worked for both the North America and Latin America regions in the health care, public affairs and corporate practices.
Mr. Fernandez has implemented bilingual training programs in Latin America, working closely with clients in Argentina, Mexico and Brazil.
Before joining Burson-Marsteller, Mr. Fernandez was an associate at the Fund for the City of New York, a foundation designed to counsel city government agencies and nonprofit organizations.
Mr. Fernandez serves on the board of Cause-Effective, a nonprofit organization that provides technical assistance and consulting services to other community-based organizations in New York.
Mr. Fernandez holds a master’s degree in public affairs from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School and a bachelor’s degree in English, summa cum laude, from Amherst College. He is fluent in Spanish.
